AETI SELECT CASE STUDIES
Below are a few case studies for your review. Although all projects will be different, and handled in a different manner, these case studies should give you a good start in understanding how projects begin, proceed, and conclude.
| Site |
Chevrolet/Nissan Dealership — Springfield, VA |
| Start / Completion |
February 2000 / June 2000 |
| Project Background: |
Subsurface soil sampling by AETI resulted in the discovery of petroleum-contaminated soil from leaking hydraulic lifts and
spills from a 550-gallon storage tank for above ground waste oil, located in a confined space.
Initial abatement activities
were conducted including source removal, soil excavation and disposal at a landfill.
In order to minimize business
disruption and hazards inherently posed by the presence of heavy equipment, AETI scheduled its field operations
to accommodate client needs, including working during non-business hours and on weekends.
Pursuant to regulatory requirements, a detailed soil and groundwater assessment was
conducted to delineate the contamination plume. A risk assessment was also performed in order to determine the level
of threat to potential receptors.
Based on our findings, it was apparent that contaminants were effectively removed and
test data further provided evidence that no contamination had migrated away from the source areas.
The project was
completed on time and under expected budget. This project is a good example of cooperation between regulatory
agencies, consultants, and proactive clients. |
| Current Status: |
Upon review of AETI findings and recommendations, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) determined that the site no longer represented an identifiable risk to the environment or human health.
No further action (NFA) status was granted, based on AETI findings nd recommendations, and the case was closed successfully.

Litigation Support for Dry Cleaner — Redmond, WA |
| Start / Completion |
August 1997 / November 1997 |
| Project Background: |
In 1997, AETI was retained by a dry cleaning operator in Redmond, Washington, to dispute a law-suit by the property owner, who was claiming that soil and groundwater had been contaminated by volatile organic compounds (VOC) from negligent handling and storage of hazardous dry cleaning fluids.
Upon initial AETI investigation, it was evident that the current operators were in compliance with safe handling, storage and disposal of perchloroethylene ("perc").
AETI performed a detailed soil and groundwater assessment, including chemical fingerprinting, and establish that the current operators were not to blame for the contamination.
AETI was also able to provide evidence to prove that former operation at the site caused the contamination through representative VOC rate of degradation.
|
| Current Status: |
As a result, the property owner(s) dropped the civil charges against the current operator (AETI client) and elected to pursue legal remedies against the former operator.
The property owners had been seeking property and monetary damages of approximately $140,000.

Shari Court Community — Catharpin, VA |
| Start / Completion |
June 1998 / in progress |
| Project Background: |
Several drinking water wells were impacted by leaking underground heating oil storage tanks in a residential area of
Northern Virginia. AETI was brought in to assess and remediate the situation.
After source removal, AETI was retained to thoroughly assess geologic and hydrologic conditions and
develop a corrective action plan (CAP) for review by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ).
In December 2001, AETI
submitted all of the findings to the VDEQ with recommendations. The proposed remediation plan was approved by the
regulatory agency and AETI immediately implemented the proposed aquifer restoration program.
Mobile dual phase
extraction equipment was assembled to recover free phase product and granulated activated carbon adsorption systems
are used to recover dissolved phase petroleum hydrocarbons.
Two new contamination free drinking water wells were also installed
for area residents to replace the impacted wells. |
| Current Status: |
AETI is currently undergoing recovery operations as part of the aquifer restoration
program.

Mountain View Community — Herndon, VA |
| Start / Completion |
March 2001 / September 2001 |
| Project Background: |
AETI was asked to investigate a suspected leaking fuel oil tanks. It was discovered that a high water table and unfavorable subsurface conditions had contributed
to a significant source of contamination from 8 leaking fuel oil tanks.
AETI removed all of
the leaking tanks, and more than 150 tons of heavily saturated soil
were excavated and treated at an off-site facility. Numerous monitoring wells
were installed in order to track plume migration.
Field data collected suggests
that sufficient evidence exists for natural attenuation of petroleum hydrocarbons. |
| Current Status: |
Upon review of AETI findings, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ)
determined that the sites no longer represents an identifiable risk to the environment
or human health.
No further action (NFA) status was granted, based on AETI findings and recommendations, for all 8 sites and the cases
were closed successfully. |
